The Bridge

This was part of a little experiment. It was the second time I came to NYC in 2009 and though I already had shots of the “main sights”. You know, those pics taken a zillion times nobody wants to see any longer. And I took plenty of them!

First I wanted to try some street photography. To be honest – I’m not the right guy for doing this. At least not yet. Popping up in front of complete strangers and flashing their brains off is not my style.

Therefore I decided to shoot the whole 3 days in b/w only. Normally I wouldn’t do this. There is no real advantage of shooting b/w – in the first place. Of coure, you have much more influence on your b/w pics if you convert them from color raws. But shooting in b/w needs a total different set of skills. The ability to ignore colors and concentrate on structures and shading only has to be trained.

You can no longer trust your first sight if you want to get nice b/w pictures.

In the end it worked “kind of”. A lot of pictures were crap but I brought home some good shots as well. And those look slightly different than plainly converted color pictures.
